Dear architects…

Dear architects…

The role of architects and urban planners is to articulate society’s demands and to examine them critically. They have the tools to affect the development and operation of settlement and landscape. However, with the increasing complexity of designing the build-up environment, architects often confine to a mere fulfillment of normative, formal, or economical demands and refuse to challenge them or to comment on planning-related societal issues. The project Dear architects… attempted to trigger a discussion about the role of an architect in the current society (in the Czech, and Slovak, context) – how it is understood by architects themselves, but also other professionals researching on societal and environmental issues. By addressing them, we tried to re-think the position of the profession of an architect in today’s Czech society and defined seven rules to change it.

The Future of Brno Centre

The Future of Brno Centre

In September 2015 The Statutory City of Brno announced an international two round urban urban-planning competition The Future of Brno Centre. Its subject was the urban and traffic design for a new Brno railway station situated on a site below Petrov Hill and simultaneously proposing a strategy for creating a fully-fledged part of town – on the site of the South Centre presently under development. The aim was to find both the design for an urban planning concept and the method and tools for its successful implementation. The exhibition presented all 57 proposals, including the project by knesl kynčl architects which was the only one to deal with the railway station in its current location, and eight designs finished in the second round.

8+8 / realizations + projects of family houses

A family house represents a specific type of building, holding a great challenge as well as various pitfalls. It is about searching for a code – code of the site, the house, and its future residents. As the title suggests, the exhibition of knesl kynčl architects presented 16 projects of family houses in various design phases and stages of realization which are abound in the practice of the studio. At the same time, it is a local topic – almost all presented houses are located in Brno or its immediate vicinity. The exhibition was accompanied by a homonymous catalogue (KNESL + KYNČL s.r.o., Brno, 2014).

Sites of Architectural Example / Defiance

Sites of Architectural Example / Defiance

The project Sites of Architectural Example / Defiance, subtitled Czech Architecture Outside the Centres 1990–2013, deals with progressive buildings designed in the period between 1990 and 2013 in villages and towns in the Czech Republic with a population of less than 20 000. It is apparent from the title that architecture can be both an example to various local governments or private entities, as well as be perceived as a manifestation of courage that results in the strengthening or even fundamental transformation of the identity of a certain location. The project is supported by the publication (Petr Volf, Architectura, Praha, 2014).
Several projects by knesl kynčl architekti were included: 00016 TJ Sokol Křižanovice, 00109 the renovation of st. Roch chapel, 00200 Environmental Center Rychleby and 00210 Nové Město na Moravě Terminal Station
