The city of Kuřim, with a population of approximately 11.000, is located 15 km northwest of Brno and it is the biggest city of former Brno-Country District. Thanks to its good accessibility, public facilities and natural surroundings, it is a popular place to live. The new hotel is a part of the sports area in the northern part of the city, on the boundary between the residential area and the industrial zone. The location and the ground plan are partially limited by the surrounding conditions; the base copies the shape of the adjacent playing field with a vertical tower with hotel rooms rising up from it. The concept of the hotel is based on the contrast of these two parts – service and accommodation – and on the contrast of two principles – earthiness and ethereality. Earthiness is represented by the ground floor and basement reserved for various service facilities (reception, restaurant, congress center, bowling); while the upper floors are supposed to evoke the feeling of lightness. The dematerialization is supported by structural glazing of the façade mirroring the surroundings, even melting in it. The atmosphere is also enhanced by strictly white rooms – it gives guests the feeling of sleeping in the clouds.
