Located 15 km northwest of Brno, the town of Kuřim with its population of approximately 11,000 is the biggest of the former Brno-Country District. Thanks to good accessibility, available shops and amenities and scenic surroundings, it is a popular place to live. The new hotel will be built as part of a sports complex in the northern part of the city on the boundary between residential and industrial developments. The location on the site and the floor plan arrangement are partially limited by surrounding conditions: the tower with hotel rooms rises upwards from a recessed ground floor which copies the shape of the adjacent playground. The design concept is based on the contrast between these two parts – services and accommodation – and on the contrast of two principles – earthiness and ethereality. Earthiness is represented by the ground floor and basement reserved mostly for services (reception desk, restaurant, congress centre, bowling); while the upper floors are meant to evoke the feeling of lightness. The volume of the building is suppressed by the structural glass façade mirroring the surrounding landscape and the feeling of lightness is further supported by the colour of the room’s interiors done exclusively in white.
