00027 / square in oslavany
location: Oslavany, South Moravian Region, Czech Republic
client: Oslavany Municipality
project: 2003–2006
project area: 1,32 ha

Oslavany is a city located 25 km southwest of Brno, in a picturesque valley of the Oslava River. The city was lacking a square, now newly created by connecting the existing open space in front of the town hall with a former manor next to the castle. The existing part and the new part are separated by a road following a bridge over the river; the new part is surrounded by newly-built houses from three sides. To the north, there is a retirement home that opens towards the castle [00037], the eastern side is defined by a multifunctional house with a supermarket in the parterre and apartments in the upper floors [00045]; the western side along the river is occupied by a municipal residential house [00051]. The southern side adjacent to the road is left without development so that both parts of the square can be visually connected. The physical connection and leveling of an approximately two-meter difference in height is provided by a ramp and a wide retrograding staircase that can be used for sitting as an urban style amphitheater or agora.
